Privacy Policy

AI Chess Coach ("we", "us") operates the browser extension, desktop application, and web service at aichess.coach. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how it is used and protected.

1. Data We Collect

Account information

Your email address and a bcrypt-hashed password (plaintext is never stored)
Chess platform usernames you provide for Lichess and Chess.com (both "my accounts" and "watch list" entries)

Chess games and positions

Full PGN text of games you import or that we fetch from Lichess/Chess.com on your behalf
Every board position (FEN notation) you navigate to during a coaching session
Move annotations, opening names, game phase summaries, and Stockfish engine evaluations we compute for those positions

Coaching conversations

Every message you send to the AI coach and every response it returns, along with the board position in context at the time of each message
Token counts and AI model cost associated with each message (used for billing)

Subscription and billing

Your Stripe customer ID and subscription plan
Monthly AI usage costs accumulated in the current billing period
We do not store payment card numbers or bank details — those are held by Stripe

Technical

Your IP address is extracted to enforce per-IP rate limits. It is not written to persistent logs.
Auth tokens (JWTs) are stored in the browser extension's local storage, not in cookies.

2. How We Use Your Data

Deliver chess analysis, Stockfish evaluations, and AI coaching responses
Maintain your game library, coaching sessions, and conversation history across devices and sessions
Calculate and bill your monthly AI usage costs
Enforce rate limits and prevent abuse
Respond to your support requests

We do not use your data for advertising, sell it to third parties, or use it to train AI models.

3. Third-Party Services

Anthropic (Claude AI)

When you ask the AI coach a question, we send your chess positions, game data, and conversation history to Anthropic's API to generate the response. We do not include your email address or account identifiers in these requests. Anthropic's use of this data is governed by Anthropic's Privacy Policy.

Stripe

When you create an account, your email address is shared with Stripe to create a billing customer record. When you subscribe, Stripe processes and stores your payment method. We store only your Stripe customer ID. Stripe's use of this data is governed by Stripe's Privacy Policy.

Lichess and Chess.com

When you link a platform username, we fetch your recent games from those platforms' public APIs using your username. We send a standard User-Agent: AI-Chess-Coach/1.0 header. We do not share any data with Lichess or Chess.com beyond the usernames and game IDs you provide.

Umami Analytics

We use self-hosted Umami to measure anonymous page visits on this website and on app.aichess.coach (public shared sessions). Umami does not use cookies and does not collect personal data. See section 7 for details.

4. Data Retention and Deletion

Your account data, game library, board positions, and coaching conversations are stored until you delete your account. There is no automatic expiry.

You can delete individual coaching sessions and games at any time from within the app.

To request full account deletion — which removes your email, chess usernames, all games, all conversations, and all coaching sessions from our servers — email anurag.angara@gmail.com. We will process the request within 30 days.

Note: deleting your account cancels your subscription but does not automatically trigger a refund. See the Terms of Service for the cancellation and refund policy.

5. Security

Passwords are bcrypt-hashed before storage. The plaintext is discarded immediately.
All data in transit is encrypted using HTTPS/TLS.
Auth tokens are stored in the browser extension's local storage, which is scoped to the extension and not accessible to websites you visit.

6. Children

This service is not directed to children under 13. If you are under 13, do not create an account. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child under 13 without parental consent, we will delete it promptly.

7. Analytics and Tracking

We use Umami Analytics, a self-hosted, open-source analytics tool, on aichess.coach and app.aichess.coach. Umami does not use cookies and does not collect personal data.

Country (derived from IP address — the IP itself is never stored or logged)

All data is anonymized and aggregated. No individual visitor can be identified or tracked across page views. All analytics data is stored on our own servers and is never shared with third parties.

No cookies, no consent banner required. Because Umami sets no cookies and collects no personal data, it is exempt from GDPR, CCPA, and PECR cookie consent requirements. We display a brief notice as a matter of transparency.

Opt out. Click "Opt out" in the notice bar at the bottom of the page to stop your visits from being counted. This applies per site — opting out on aichess.coach and app.aichess.coach are stored separately in each site's local storage. Both take effect immediately — no account needed.

The only other logging we perform is internal server-side logging for debugging and error monitoring.

8. Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes, we will update the effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of the service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
